 Art

The weekly art program at Highland Elementary exposes children in grades kindergarten through fifth grade to a variety of art media and techniques while learning the elements of art and principles of design. Kindergartners, first and second graders have art for 35 minutes each week while third, fourth and fifth graders receive it for 45 minutes. Lessons are based on the district's visual arts curriculum  and also help reinforce individual grade level studies in writing, reading, social studies, and science.

Highland has continuous art shows within the building, culminating in "A Night of the Arts" in the spring. Additionally, we have several outside shows including the Curtis Center for the Arts, All-District Show at Bemis Library, and the display at the Educational Services Center.

Highland students have participated in service projects including making cards for the Basket of Joy holiday program, Veteran's Day displays, thank you cards and various other projects. They also have the opportunity to have their artwork produced on mugs, mouse pads, t-shirts and more through the Original Works or Silver Graphics Fundraiser. Highland was named to the Original Works Art Institute Honor Roll which selects the top 5 % of reviewed schools nationwide based on the quality of their art work. Our school is in an elite category of only 100 schools across the nation to receive this honor.

Each year, the students learn about three artists by visiting a re-created art gallery in their art room and by a variety of art lessons about each artist. Parent volunteers are always welcomed in the art room to enjoy the fun!
