Reading
Beginning in October, your child will bring home a reading book bag consisting of a book at your child’s reading level. You should expect to see the bag brought home Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights. After each reading, please write the date, title of the book, and initial the reading log, which is provided by your child’s teacher. The book bag is expected to be returned to school each day. After reading, please encourage your child to retell the story using as many details as possible.
Math
Homework is usually sent home Monday through Thursday and is due the following day. Math homework consists of Home Links which correspond to our Everyday Mathematics lessons. Encourage your child to also practice addition and subtraction facts.
Spelling
Spelling words will begin to come home during the second half of the school year. Each week, your child will have ten spelling words, three of which are “outlaw words.” These are first grade high-frequency words that may or may not follow phonetic rules. The words will come home on a homework sheet that lists many different ideas to use when practicing spelling words at home. Please initial AT LEAST THREE activities that your child completes and make sure you return the form to school by Friday.
