Junior Great Books is a national extracurricular enrichment reading program. This program reinforces the students' interpretive reading skills, inquiry skills and their ability to share ideas in group conversations with other students. The kindergarten and 1st grade is a read-aloud program with parents reading the story to their child at home. Second through fifth graders are expected to read the story on their own or with help at home prior to coming to the meeting. We meet in small groups of either single grade or two grade combinations (depending on enrollment) to discuss the story. This program is for children of all reading abilities.
The textbooks, which are published by the Junior Great Books Foundation, contain a variety of quality children's stories and poetry. The adult leader is a volunteer who has been trained by the Junior Great Books Foundation. The leader will facilitate discussions and lead activities related to the readings.
Highland Elementary offers two sessions per year. Look for the opportunity to join this wonderful enrichment activity in the fliers that your children will be bringing home or in the Highland Highlights.
