 Postal Service, Highland Elementary School

Our school provides an internal postal program, which is coordinated through the United States Postal Service. On October 28, 1991, the US Post Office officially opened a "Wee Deliver" postal system at Highland Elementary with Bea Romer, wife of former Governor Roy Romer presiding. Highland was one of the first elementary schools to open a postal system within their school and it is still in existence today.

Interested fifth grade students go through a career application process:

  • Filling out a job application
  • Receiving a study guide in order to prepare for a written exam
  • Completing the exam with a score of 80% or better
  • Interviewing with the principal and the sponsors of the Postal System, Mrs. Franks and Mrs. Williams
  • Training for the particular job for which they have been selected

Several positions need to be filled: Postmaster, Carriers, Nixie Clerks and Sorters. The student postal employees separate and categorize mail, as well as collect and deliver the mail to all the children and staff at Highland. Each student and staff member has an individual mailing address which is compiled into an all-school Postal Directory. Every hallway at Highland has one or two city names chosen by the staff and children to represent a specific grade level. Each classroom has their own wooden mailbox located on the wall outside their classroom which sports their individual street name.

The children who fulfill all the requirements to be a Postal Employee are honored at a Recognition Assembly in the fall of the year. The Postmaster is administered the Oath of Office by a United States Post Office employee. For several years, we have been fortunate to have Mr. Abraham Payton, the Manager of Customer Relations and Coordinators for the US Post Office in Centennial, officiate at our assembly. Mrs. Deb Franks and Mrs. Krista Williams co-sponsor the Postal Service at Highland Elementary.
