Highland Elementary School is fortunate to have an active Student Council comprised of students in grades 2-5. Our Student Council members volunteer in several areas: service projects, fundraisers and recycling.
Interested fifth grade students apply, campaign and run for one of four offices: President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer. After students submit an application and permission slip, they are ready to campaign and videotape their speeches. The fifth grade students view the speeches and then an election is held. Every second through fifth grade classroom have two representatives who attend meetings once a month and help promote and participate with the many projects that occur throughout the year. Every Student Council Officer or Representative are hard-working, enthusiastic and dedicated members who are truly responsible to lead our school community.
Our Student Council Members encourage our Highland Community to volunteer in service projects, donate in fund-raising activities and recycle to help our environment. Currently, we are holding a school-wide Bronco Wives Food Drive. Examples of other service projects are : donating to Interfaith, helping at Kindergarten Information Night, assisting at Kindergarten Round-Up and facilitating Grandparent's Day. The Highland Student Council sponsors two fundraisers: Selling Candy-grams during Valentine's Day Week and the Penny Race in April. The Student Council also offers the students and teachers an opportunity to recycle paper. We are so fortunate that Recycle America includes us in a weekly collection free of charge. Matt McAleer, manager of Recycle America, supplied recycling bins for classrooms and a large collection receptacle.
Last year our Student Council donated money locally, nationally and internationally. The pennies during our Annual Penny Race were donated to the Pennies for Peace Program to help build schools in the remote mountain regions of Pakistan and Afghanistan. Some money was donated to ASPCA, The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The Student Council also helped to purchase some desks for the third grade classrooms . This year we are continuing to sponsor Pennies for Peace in their goal of building schools in remote regions and to encourage girls to have an education. We are also going to sponsor Nothing but Nets, which provides netting in third world countries to protect against malaria. For our school, we are going to purchase a digital screen for Highland's front hallway in order to provide ongoing photos of the current events at Highland to our community.
We are proud of our Student Council Members and the worthwhile service they perform. Participating in leadership activities provides and encourages our children to participate in future leadership activities and lays a foundation to become a better informed citizen.
