 The Beaver Buzz

The Beaver Buzz is a newspaper written by the students at Highland Elementary School that is published and distributed monthly. The goal of The Beaver Buzz is to provide students who like to write with an opportunity to write and express themselves creatively. At the same time, it provides the wider Highland Community with interesting articles and games. The students choose stories and ideas that are of interest to them.

The Beaver Buzz is open to all students in grades 4 and 5 who are motivated, responsible and have a strong interest in writing. However, students in any grade are encouraged to submit stories, artwork, etc. at anytime during the year and they will be incorporated into future issues.

Meetings are held Tuesdays before school in the Computer Lab or Library. Students are encouraged to research their articles outside of these meetings. Parent volunteers supervise, assist, and support the students as they create their articles.

Currently, the Beaver Buzz is supported by four PTO volunteers. Stephanie Martinez is a parent volunteer and employee at Highland Elementary. Traci Bilek, a mother of 3 students at Highland, helps with editing and encourages the children to bring out their inner journalist. Tracey Arcuri, a mother of 2 students at Highland, also helps with editing and writing.  Karen Krizman, a parent and former journalist herself, brings all the articles together into the paper's final form. All parents are welcome to assist our budding journalists to create one of the few elementary school papers in the country.
